1980’s - 2000’s
In the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s, UC Santa Barbara emerged as a true research leader in both the sciences and the humanities. Over the last three decades, our faculty have won Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics, and economics, MacArthur “Genius” Grants, a Pulitzer Prize, and more.
They have significantly advanced scholarship and knowledge across the disciplines, from Black studies, ChicanX studies, and feminist studies, to history, music, and anthropology. Today, the university serves approximately 25,000 students and is an elected member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, as well as a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution.
