Life at Camp
After work, the crew cleans up and goes to dinner in the kitchen. The cook, often the only woman in camp, prepares daily meals of rice, beans, and meat. Following dinner the crew gathers around a TV powered by a diesel generator. After the 8 p.m. telenovela ends, the generator is powered down and the miners retire to their hammocks under a shared blacktarp roof. To maintain peace and ensure that miners are able to work, guns are rarely allowed and alcohol and drugs are prohibited.
